The purpose in which the government was established was in order to get the country rallied behind on cause instead of the states running their own individual countries. This was what the problem was with the Articles of Confederation. Since it was weak, the states were able to walk all over the federal government, therefor insuring that nothing would ever be accomplished.
This is when the founders realized that they would need a stronger government to have control (Constitution) and keep the country going in the right direction. This is still the case today. Everyone in this country looks up to Congress and the President for directions that this country is going.
Also the founders came up with the idea of checks and balances, which is the monitoring of one branch of government with another branch of the government to make sure that no one sector gets too much power. This also works in this year because it is always important for the control to be there.
When this system of a strong government was created, Thomas Jefferson and his group of anti-federalists were very irritated due to their wants of a small and weak central government that included states rights. With this the ant- federalists knew that they had lost. This new system gave a more defined separation, but allowed for them to bleed together. This has even worsened with time because now there are even more things that states and the government may disagree on that would allow for more discrepancies.
The government should have whatever control over the people that they feel absolutely necessary for this country to continue to thrive and prosper.
