Political parties are formed through the childhood and usually through the exposure to one's parents and others that one spends a significant time with. Throughout one's life, one's exposure to their lives changes their viewpoints on life and thus the party that they identify with. This happens very commonly to people that can identify with both parties and are therefor in the middle grounds of the powers.
Peoples workplace and environment that they are in continuously shape the way they think about politics because it's where people talk about things and can get information about what others think. It shapes the way that people learn about ways to act and thus how they think.
In the United States the type of things that the parties are formed from go back to the federalists and the anti-federalists fight over the Constitution. The changes in the culture have not effected the two party system and this is because of yes or no type of mentality that goes hand and hand with the parties.
Unfortunately for the American people, they do not always control who they want to run for the seat in question. That is up to the people who give the money to the candidates so they can run for office. From this, they owe the companies or PACs their support and that's what they'll give them if elected. The candidates then have to rely on their managers to get the support of the people to win their seat.
